The World No.1 had to accept an early exit after losing to 20-year-old Luca Nardi

Novak Djokovic, who waited five years for a return to Indian Wells due to U.S. travel restrictions, experienced an unexpected and swift exit from the California desert as 20-year-old Luca Nardi achieved a remarkable 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 upset on Monday. The world number one, aiming for a record sixth title at the tournament, faced disappointment against the 123rd-ranked lucky loser.

Reflecting on the surprising loss, Djokovic acknowledged Nardi’s excellent performance, stating, “He really didn’t have anything to lose, so he played great. Deserved to win.” Djokovic expressed surprise at his own performance, describing his level as “really, really bad,” attributing the unexpected outcome to a combination of Nardi’s strong play and his own off day.

While Djokovic struggled, Nardi showcased agility, powerful serves, and forehands, securing victory against the player he admired growing up. Djokovic admitted to making “some really terrible unforced errors” and recognized his defensive play. He noted Nardi’s more aggressive approach, emphasizing the pivotal break in the third set.

Despite the setback, Djokovic revealed his plans to compete in the Miami Open later this month, seeking his first title of the year. Reflecting on the unusual absence of titles this year, Djokovic expressed determination to break the negative cycle and return to his best form, acknowledging that every trophy earned would be significant in this context.
