Novak Djokovic reached his 35th Grand Slam final in a rather comfortable fashion by defeating Jannik Sinner in straight sets.
However, there was one moment that caught the attention of pundits and spectators and infuriated the veteran Serb.
In the second set umpire Richard Haigh decided to dock the 36-year-old a point for alleged extended grunt.
The stunned Djokovic approached the umpire’s chair, inquiring for the reason behind such call, which he labelled as one that “could have changed the course of the match”.
“I felt nervous after that call, but I managed to regroup,” Djokovic said.
“It’s probably the first time it’s happened to me.”
Former Wimbledon champion John McEnroe showed his support for Djokovic, stating that it was a “horrible decision”.
“He handled it admirably – way, way better than most players,” McEnroe said on BBC.
“I would have hated if that was a turning point.”
“Horrible, horrible call. Sinner’s ball went back in court and dropped foot from baseline. How much of a hindrance could it have been?”
