Bayern opened the scoring in the 19th minute through Dayot Upamecano. However, their joy short-lived as Freiburg managed to find an equalizer with Nicolas Hoffler’s tremendous volley in the 27th minute.
Towards the closing stages Bayern looked the likelier team to find the decisive goal, but all of Thomas Tuchel’s men attempts seemed to come to a dead end.
The tie seemed to be heading to extra-time, before Freiburg were awarded a penalty right at the dead for a handball from Jemal Musiala. Up stepped Lucas Holer and he kept his composure and drove a high shot past goalkeeper Sommer and into the back of the net.
It is one of the worst possible starts for Bayern’s new head-coach Thomas Tuchel as the Bavarians part ways with their chances of a domestic double and have to now firmly focus on the Champions League, where they face a tough opposition against Manchester City, and in the Bundesliga, where they are entangled in a tight tittle race with Borussia Dortmund.
