Germany secured the United Cup on Sunday by defeating top-seeded Poland in a thrilling showdown. Alexander Zverev and Laura Siegemund emerged victorious in the decisive mixed doubles match against Hubert Hurkacz and Iga Swiatek.
After Swiatek and Zverev each won their respective singles matches, the German duo clinched the doubles match with a hard-fought 6-4, 5-7, 10-4 victory.
Despite a challenging group stage that barely saw Germany qualify for the knockouts, Zverev and Siegemund formed a formidable partnership, winning three decisive matches in as many days to lead their team to the title. Poland, however, didn’t leave empty-handed, as Swiatek was awarded the Most Valuable Player for her outstanding performances in both singles and mixed doubles throughout the tournament.
In the singles rubbers, world number one Swiatek showcased her prowess by defeating Angelique Kerber in a high-quality match, preparing for the upcoming Australian Open. The 22-year-old secured a convincing 6-3, 6-0 win in 70 minutes.
Zverev faced a tough challenge against Hurkacz, saving two match points to level the tie with a 6-7(3), 7-6(6), 6-4 victory. Despite initial setbacks, Zverev showcased resilience, saving match points with a sublime forehand pass and ultimately winning the epic three-hour encounter on his second match point to set the stage for the decisive mixed doubles match.
