The Cleveland Guardians made history by selecting Travis Bazzana as the No. 1 pick in Sunday night’s MLB Draft. The Oregon State star, overwhelmed with emotion, described the moment as “unbelievable” and beyond words.
Bazzana’s 2024 season stats are indeed remarkable. The Pac-12 Player of the Year batted .407 with 28 home runs and 66 RBIs, leading the Beavers to a super regional as the No. 15 national seed, where they lost to second-seeded Kentucky. Bazzana, the first second baseman ever selected with the No. 1 overall pick, set an Oregon State single-season record with 84 runs and a slugging percentage of .911. Additionally, he stole 16 bases and had an on-base percentage of .568, earning consensus first-team All-America honors.

This selection marked the first time Cleveland had the top overall pick, which they earned by winning the draft lottery despite not having the worst regular-season record last year.

Following Bazzana, the Cincinnati Reds drafted Wake Forest right-hander Chase Burns, who led Division I with 191 strikeouts in 100 innings, frequently reaching over 100 miles per hour with his fastballs.
The Colorado Rockies picked Georgia outfielder Charlie Condon, who led Division I with 37 home runs and a .433 batting average in 2024. Condon attributed his development to hard work and trusting the process.
