Aryna Sabalenka was triumphant in her first-round match against Marta Kostyuk 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday.
However, a high-profile drama engulfed on court as the Ukranian refused to shake her opponent’s hand after the match.
As a consequence, she received intense booing from the crowd, who was displeased with her attitude.
Kostyuk has regularly refused to shake hand with Russian and Belarusian player after the invasion of Ukraine last February.
“It was a very tough match — I would say tough emotionally,” Sabalenka commented.
During the on-court interview she said that the thought the jeering was against her and apologized to the crowd as she felt their support.
Sabalenka won her first Grand Slam title in Australia this year and will be looking to repeat her success at this edition of the French Open.
