Liverpool reclaimed the top spot on the table with a victory against struggling Burnley in front of a record-breaking crowd at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp’s team sought to bounce back after a recent defeat by Arsenal and opened the scoring with Diogo Jota’s header from a corner, taking advantage of Burnley keeper James Trafford’s failure to claim the ball.
Despite being in the relegation zone for most of the season, Burnley managed to level the score before halftime with Dara O’Shea’s superb header. Luis Diaz restored Liverpool’s lead in the 52nd minute, and despite Burnley having several chances to equalize, Darwin Nunez’s header from Harvey Elliott’s cross secured the points for Liverpool.
In a tense afternoon, both Klopp and Burnley boss Vincent Kompany were booked by referee Tim Robinson for protesting decisions against their respective teams. Liverpool was without first-choice keeper Alisson due to illness, but stand-in Caoimhin Kelleher made a crucial save to deny David Datro Fofana an equalizer when the score was 2-1.
Despite Manchester City briefly taking the top spot with a 2-0 win over Everton in the early kick-off, Liverpool is now two points clear, although they have played one game more than their closest rivals. Burnley remains in the 19th position.
