Jason (53) will begin “with immediate effect” after the Championship team “reluctantly agreed” to let him leave.
Ex-United player Darren Fletcher, who has been technical director since 2021, will remain on the team as part of the front office.
The club from the Old Trafford announced: “Jason Wilcox has joined the Red Devils as technical director as he already started working.
“Wilcox will work with all technical areas of the football department to make the team better.”
Jason will work under the sporting director, set to be Dan Ashworth. Dan is at the moment on gardening leave from the Magpies but it is expected soon that Manchester United will appoint him.
He is the 2nd major hiring since Sir Jim Ratcliffe became a minority owner of the Red Devils.
