According to tournament director Amelie Mauresmo, Rafael Nadal is unlikely to be seeded at the upcoming French Open tennis tournament. Nadal himself has not confirmed his participation in the event, despite his record 14 titles at Roland Garros.
Due to a string of injuries, the 37-year-old Nadal has seen a significant drop in his world ranking, currently sitting at 512th place. However, if he does decide to compete, Nadal will benefit from the “protected ranking” system, allowing long-absent players to bypass qualifiers and enter the main draw directly.
Traditionally, the French Open, along with the other three Grand Slam tournaments, seeds players based on their ATP rankings, with the top 32 players receiving seeding. This differs from Wimbledon’s previous practice, where players’ past performances in the event were considered independently for seeding.
“At the moment, we are not discussing whether he will be seeded. Wimbledon had such a practice for many, many years, which certainly gave some advantage. However, we have all seen the flaws in this scheme. At the moment, we are not discussing anything like that, and we wish him luck to play,” said Mauresmo.
“Whether he participates or not depends solely on him. We wish him success.”
