Jannik Sinner credited his strong start to the 2024 season as the key factor in securing the year-end number one ranking after defeating Tomas Machac 6-4, 7-5 in the Shanghai Masters semi-finals on Saturday. Sinner, who will face Novak Djokovic in the final, first claimed the top spot during the French Open in June and has maintained his position ever since, becoming the first Italian to achieve this milestone.

The 23-year-old had a remarkable season, winning six titles, including his first two Grand Slam championships at the Australian Open and U.S. Open. Sinner began the year with a 16-match winning streak, which greatly boosted his confidence, culminating in 64 victories and just six losses to date in 2024.

Reflecting on whether he had anticipated reaching the top ranking at the start of the year, Sinner admitted, “No, not really, because you cannot predict the future in one way. It also depends on how you start a season. You know, if you start it in a good way like I did, winning Australia, then you have much more confidence throughout the whole season.”
In addition to his individual success, Sinner set a record for the most wins by a male Italian player in a single season in the Open Era, leading an impressive Italian surge in 2024, which also included the rise of Jasmine Paolini, who reached the finals of both the French Open and Wimbledon.
