USA center Joel Embiid has embraced the boos from French fans during the Paris Olympic Games. The Cameroonian-born player, who now holds an American passport and opted to represent the USA instead of France, spoke about his interactions with the local supporters. Embiid faced boos every time he touched the ball during the group stage of the competition.
“I’ve always enjoyed the boos,” Embiid said. “People think it should be something negative, but I see it as a sign of love and respect. If I weren’t a good basketball player, I wouldn’t receive this kind of attention. I’m blessed, and that’s why I try to engage with the audience. I’ve seen worse treatment and played in more hostile environments. It’s not like I haven’t encountered something like this before.”
Embiid, who plays for the Philadelphia 76ers, noted that the boos remind him of his experiences in Philadelphia, where fans are known for their tough love. “In Philadelphia, for example, they boo their own players more than the opponent. As I said, I feel good because the audience is trying to push you to do better. I enjoy it because it drives me to be better and give more of myself to win,” he added.
