Virgil van Dijk came under severe criticism for his rusty performance in the 2-2 draw against Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday.
The 31-year old defender was slammed for his amateur error, which led to Arsenal’s opening goal.
However, Liverpool’s ex-defender and current pundit Jamie Garragher came to the defense of the struggling defender, drawing comparisons with the legendary Manchester United’s center back Nemanja Vidic. Despite his flaw this season, Garragher claimed that van Dijk is far better than the Serbian.
In a social media post, Garragher was quick to remind that even the greatest CB have endured a difficult times, such as Vidic performance in a 4-1 loss to Liverpool, or even John Terry’s whole 2012-13 season. The former Liverpool defender emphasized that the fact that van Dijk has competed among the Premier League attacking players for the best player award in the last couple of years, is a certain indication that his level is exceptionally high.
VVD is far better than Vidic, who was a top CB, but have you forgot his performances against Torres?
Rio & JT had poor seasons in their career like all players, VVD is having one now.
No CB in the PL era has ever had VVD’s impact on a team. https://t.co/rZ7vfHRN7d

Most of this come as a reaction to comments from Roy Keane and Gary Neville, who both slammed the Dutchman sloppy defending in both Arsenal’s goals on Sunday.
