Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was full of praise for Lewis Hamilton‘s recovery drive, which saw the Brit climb up to 6th from P13 on the grid at the Miami Grand Prix.
Hamilton opted for a different strategy and started on the hard tires for a long first stint, which paid dividends as he had the faster medium tire in the closing stages. That enabled the 7-time world champion to make a handful of overtakes, including one on Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
“He’s had a mega performance, because when you start 13th with a car that’s really not easy to drive, then had to plough through the field…” Wolff commented.
“At the end he had real pace, overtaking the Ferrari. Finishing sixth when you start 13th… It’s a very, very good job that he’s delivered today.”
Mercedes are awaiting a big package upgrade for the next race week at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, which in theory will give the car more downforce and, therefore, a better performance.
