Simone Biles inspired the United States to victory in the women’s team gymnastics event, marking the start of her “redemption tour” with a fifth Olympic gold. This victory is Biles’ first Olympic gold since Rio 2016, following her withdrawal from several events in Tokyo three years ago due to the ‘twisties’ — a disorienting mental block.

On Tuesday, Biles returned to the Olympic stage, helping the Americans reclaim the title they lost to the Russian Olympic Committee at Tokyo 2020. During that event, Biles had pulled out after the first rotation to protect her mental and physical health, leading to her withdrawal from several other finals before returning to win bronze on the beam. She then took two years off before returning last year, aiming for Paris with an even more impressive skill set.

Arriving to a deafening reception from an eager crowd, Biles played it safe in the first rotation on vault, opting for the ‘easier’ of her routines rather than the more difficult one she performed in qualifying. She then delivered excellent performances on the bars and beam, culminating in a crowd-pleasing floor routine that sealed the gold medal. The entire arena erupted in applause as Biles and her teammates celebrated their victory.
Despite her left calf being taped up, as it was in qualifying, there was no sign of it affecting her performance. Biles, along with teammates Sunisa Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and Hezly Rivera, posted a total score of 171.296, securing a convincing victory over Italy, who finished with 165.494.
