The Champions League holder looked uninspired without Kylian Mbappe

Jonathan David’s first-half penalty secured a stunning 1-0 victory for Lille over defending European champions Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

The decisive moment came just before halftime, when VAR adjudged Eduardo Camavinga to have illegally handled a free-kick inside the box, allowing David to convert from the spot.

Lille’s performance was relentless throughout a thrilling first half, with David coming close to scoring earlier, only to be denied by Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

In the second half, Real Madrid brought on star players Kylian Mbappé and Luka Modric in a bid to turn the game around, but Lille’s defense held firm. Lucas Chevalier made several crucial saves, while Lille twice cleared the ball off the line to secure a famous victory at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

This win not only gave Lille three vital points but also sent shockwaves through the competition, as they held off one of Europe’s biggest giants.
