Erik Ten Hag stated that Harry Maguire must up his game to prove he is worthy of a starting place, otherwise the defender will be left with no choice, but to leave Manchester United.
The Red Devils’ manager is still convinced that the 30-year-old could play a key role in his plans during the upcoming season.
But if that were to happen Maguire must prove he is world class.
“He has the ability to be a top-class centre-back,” said Ten Hag.
“He is the best for England so why shouldn’t he be the best for us?”
“But he has to prove it. When he is not confident enough to fight then he has to go, then he has to make a decision. But I’m happy with him.”
Maguire’s future still hangs in the balance and it is not clear whether the 30-year-old will be available for the opening Premier League game against Wolverhampton on Monday night.
