Bruno Fernandes’ determination to play against Tottenham Hotspur despite the pain from the ankle injury, picked in the FA 1/2 final victory over Brighton has earned the praise from head-coach Erik Ten Hag.
The Dutchman said that Fernandes desire is an example to other players in the squad and he hopes they will look up to him.
The Portuguese superstar looked set to miss United’s trip to London after getting hurt against Brighton in the FA Cup in the first half, but refusing to come off up until extra time. The next day Fernandes was pictured walking with a protective boot and with a pair of crutches.
But against all odds, the midfielder passed all test and was given the green light for the Spurs clash, which eventually ended in a 2-2 draw.
Ten Hag believes that behaviour further strengthens Fernandes leadership status as captain and should act as inspiration to other players struggling to get back to fitness.
“It was tough,” said the United boss.
“Big compliment to Bruno. He absolutely doesn’t want to miss this game, and he did everything to get fit.”
“I think he is the example that you have to suffer, that you have to sacrifice, when you want to play at the top level, when you want to achieve something.”
