Brendan Vazquez was the hero for the States

Brendan Vazquez’s 88th-minute goal saved the United States from losing to Jamaica in the Gold Cup opener.

Damian Lowe opened the scoring in the 13th minute with his third goal for the national team, and the match ended 1:1, being the first of group “A”, which also includes Trinidad and Tobago and St. Kitts and Nevis.

The Americans were without Christian Pulisic and the suspended Weston McKenney and Serginho Dest, and in the tournament they are hosting, rely mainly on players with little national team experience.

Goalkeeper Matt Turner is the only key player in the squad who was at the World Cup. He was credited with keeping the USA from losing after saving a penalty taken by Leon Bailey in the 29th minute.
