The Spain right-back, 32, suffered the injury in added time after a collision with Yeremy Pino, leading to him being stretchered off in visible distress. Following the match, Carvajal took to Instagram, confirming the extent of his injury:
“Serious cruciate ligament injury confirmed, I’m going to have to go through surgery and be off the field for a few months. Already looking forward to starting recovery and coming back like a beast.”
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti expressed concern for Carvajal, describing the mood in the team as “sad” and “worried” for their key player. He noted that the injury was likely a result of the packed football calendar, calling Carvajal a “very, very important player” for the team.
The injury will sideline Carvajal for several months, marking a significant blow for both Real Madrid and Spain.
