FIFA’s governing body has launched an investigation into the riots that broke out in the Maracana stands before the World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina, which ended 1-0 for the world champions.
The game in Rio de Janeiro was delayed for around 30 minutes as fans clashed in the stands, prompting the intervention of the police, who did not hesitate to use force against the visiting supporters.
This led to serious discontent among Lionel Scaloni’s players, and after the match, Lionel Messi and several other Argentina players criticized the actions of the police, accusing the law enforcement of unnecessary violence against the Argentine fans.
“FIFA confirms that the Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Brazilian and Argentine Football Associations.”, FIFA announced regarding the incident.
