Replacing Pep Guardiola as the manager of Manchester City is an immensely challenging task compared to finding a new coach for Liverpool at the end of the season, according to Juergen Klopp, the current manager of Liverpool.
As the Reds face City in a crucial match with a one-point lead, Klopp, who announced his departure at the season’s end, expressed that it’s an opportune moment for a managerial change at Liverpool.
Klopp stated on Friday, “I really think it is the perfect moment for a new manager and not the wrong call because we didn’t win everything, we left spaces.” He emphasized the difficulty of succeeding Guardiola at City, suggesting that winning championships consecutively for a decade might be necessary to match Guardiola’s legacy.
Reflecting on Liverpool’s previous narrow misses in the Premier League, Klopp mentioned having no regrets about losing the title to City by one point in the 2018-2019 and 2021-2022 seasons. He sees these experiences as relieving pressure and creating an ideal opportunity for his successor to aim for more silverware. Klopp concluded, “Maybe it was good for that reason that we didn’t become champion with 97 points.” Despite narrowly missing out on titles in those seasons, Klopp believes it doesn’t diminish the joy of their accomplishments at that time.
