It looked smooth and sailing for the Reds as they strolled to a 2-goals lead in the opening stages, only to allow the Saints to get back in the game with two quick goals of their own before half-time.]
It got from bad to worse for Jurgen Klopp men, who found themselves down by not one, but two goals in the second half as the hosts were rampant in front of Caoimhin Kelleher’s goal, who got a chance to shine in the place of first-choice keeper Alisson Becker.
Liverpool pulled themselves together and quickly fired another two goals in a space of a minute to tie the game at 4-4 and looked like they were on course for a full comeback.
However, it wasn’t to be as Southampton courageousely held on to the single point in their last appearance in the top-flight English football. Liverpool finish the league 5th with 67 points and they miss out on a Champions League spot for the first time in 7 years.
