Leo Messi has been named the men’s footballer of the year at The Best FIFA Football Awards in Paris.
The 35-year-0ld, who led Argentina to their first World Cup triumph since 1986 in December, beat off competition from Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Kylian Mbappe.
Messi won the award for his outstanding performances in men’s football from Aug. 8 2021 to Dec. 18 2022.
Messi previously won The Best FIFA Men’s Player award on just one other occasion.
His first appearance at the FIFA gala dated back to 2007. The former Barcelona captain had finished second behind Brazilian Kaka in the FIFA World Player of the Year standings at the time.
