The Magpies won their first trophy in 55 years

Newcastle United ended decades of heartbreak with a historic victory at Wembley, defeating Premier League leaders Liverpool to claim their first major silverware since the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

Dan Burn opened the scoring late in the first half before Alexander Isak doubled the lead after the interval with his 27th goal of the season. Federico Chiesa pulled one back for Liverpool in stoppage time, but Eddie Howe’s side held firm to secure their long-awaited triumph.

The victory marks Newcastle’s first major domestic trophy since winning the FA Cup in 1955, finally breaking a barren run that saw 30 different English clubs lift silverware in the meantime.

After falling short in the 2023 League Cup final against Manchester United, the Magpies returned to Wembley determined to set the record straight—and they delivered.

Newcastle’s rise from relegation battles to trophy winners has been rapid since their 2021 takeover by a Saudi-backed consortium, with Howe proving instrumental in the club’s transformation.

For Liverpool, the defeat added to their recent disappointment, coming just days after their Champions League exit against Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.
