Uruguay clinched third place in the Copa America with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Canada after a 2-2 draw in regulation time at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Rodrigo Bentancur gave Uruguay an early lead, smashing home a knock-down from a corner in the eighth minute. Canada’s Ismael Kone responded with a spectacular scissor kick 14 minutes later to level the score.
Uruguay had a chance to retake the lead shortly after Canada’s equalizer, but Facundo Pellistri’s goal was disallowed for offside. Canada then took the lead in the 80th minute when Jonathan David slotted home a rebound after Kone’s long-range effort was parried by Uruguay’s goalkeeper Sergio Rochet.
Uruguay pressed for an equalizer and found it in the 92nd minute when Luis Suarez, the country’s all-time leading goalscorer, perfectly timed his run to connect with a pass from Jose Maria Gimenez, scoring his 69th international goal.

In the penalty shootout, Uruguay emerged victorious with a 4-3 win. Sergio Rochet saved a tame spot-kick from Kone, and Alphonso Davies hit the crossbar, securing Uruguay’s victory. Suarez and Bentancur both converted their penalties in the shootout.
The result sees Uruguay secure third place, while Canada finishes fourth in their Copa America debut. On Sunday, the tournament’s final will feature defending champions Argentina facing off against Colombia at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
