Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes took a hit as they squandered a two-goal lead in a dramatic 2-2 draw with Aston Villa at the Emirates.
Kai Havertz thought he had snatched a late winner in the 89th minute, but VAR ruled it out for a handball on Mikel Merino’s shot. The Gunners had raced into a commanding lead, with Gabriel Martinelli capitalizing on a defensive lapse from Ian Maatsen to convert Leandro Trossard’s cross. Trossard then assisted Havertz for Arsenal’s second, as the German bagged his 13th goal of the season ten minutes after halftime.
However, Villa mounted an impressive comeback. Youri Tielemans’ header from Matty Cash’s cross cut the deficit on the hour mark before Ollie Watkins volleyed in the equalizer just eight minutes later.
The draw leaves Arsenal six points behind league leaders Liverpool, having played one game more than Arne Slot’s side. Meanwhile, Villa move up to seventh, just two points off fourth-placed Newcastle in the race for a Champions League spot.
