The Frenchman damaged the meniscus in his knee and faces a potential recovery of up to four months.
The news is a major blow to Mauricio Pochettino’s aspirations as the £53m-man looks unlikely to play before December and he was expecting to lead Chelsea’s forces up front.
Nkunku was one of Chelsea’s star performers in the pre-season tour, bagging 3 goals after being acquired from RB Leipzig this summer.
“The doctors are checking him hopefully it is not a big issue but when he fell in the action maybe it was a penalty. Had the chance to score.” Pochettino said.
“He feels something in his knee but hopefully it is not a big issue and that he can be [back] quickly with the team. Now we need a few days to assess him and until we get back to London it is difficult to know.”
