Rio Ferdinand expressed his disappointment at how his former club Manchester United has handled goalkeeper David De Gea contract negotiations.
De Gea was supposed to be given a new contract with an estimated pay-cut, but the Red Devils withdrew their offer right at the end and came up with a new one, even lower than the first one.
That left their No.1 goalkeeper with no choice, but to decline and as of today, June 30, he is a free agent as his contract has expired.
‘It’s a funny situation. Whether you think David de Gea is good enough for Manchester United anymore is up for debate.’ Ferdinand said.
‘He’s never brought the club an ounce of trouble. Never brought the club into disrepute. He’s an outstanding professional and a great character. He’s one of the boys. ‘
United could still re-sign De Gea, but Ferdinand believes it is unlikely given the way the club has treated him.
The former United player pointed out that this sort of policy is making more and more players leave the elusive team with ‘sour taste in their mouth’.
