Harry Maguire was stripped of his captaincy and the armband was given to Bruno Fernandes.
However, according to team boss Erik Ten Hag the defender still remains an important figure in the squad.
“Everyone can understand it is disappointing for a player, but it can actually work out well for the team and for Harry,” said Ten Hag.
“He stays an important player. He can fight himself into the team. He has potential and it’s up to him to get his position.
“Now he can focus more on his role, but a centre-back has to communicate and organize. It’s a big area where you have to perform as a centre-half.”
Many believe that the move to take the armband off signals the end for Maguire at Old Trafford with club legend Wayne Rooney suggesting leaving is the best thing to do.
