Simeone’s contract would have expired at the end of this season and Atletico Madrid will be glad they have been able to keep their long-serving and most successful manager.
The 53-year-old has enjoyed a highly successful stint at Atletico, leading them to two La Liga titles (2013-14, 2020-21), one Copa del Rey (2012-13), two Europa League titles (2011-12, 2017-18) and two Champions League finals (2013-14, 2015-16).
The team from Madrid have had a solid start of the new campaign despite unexpected 2-1 loss to minnows Las Palmas last weekend. Simeone’s side currently sit 4th, six points adrift from shocking leaders Girona.
