Barcelona admitted the procedure is aimed at fixing the “problems in the lumbar region” that have kept the defender away from the pitch in the past few weeks.
The Catalan club added that they will share more after the procedure is conducted, and it is too early to have a timetable for the defender’s recovery.
The ex-Chelsea player has appeared in 7 matches this campaign, 4 from the 1st minute on the pitch. Alonso has played 44 matches for Barca, netting 3 goals after inking with Barcelona as a free agent.
His team is in 4th place in the league – 7 points behind leaders Los Blancos and Girona after 18 games, and their next match in La Liga will be against Las Palmas on Thursday.
