"He took us to the final three years ago and brought us to the final here, but we didn't win," English legend says

Former England captain Alan Shearer has shared his belief that Gareth Southgate’s tenure as England’s national team manager is likely coming to an end following the defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Speculation about Southgate’s future has been rife since the loss, with many wondering whether he will continue in his role.

Southgate’s contract is set to expire at the end of the year. Despite indicating that he needs time to contemplate his future, Shearer feels that the Euro 2024 final might have been Southgate’s last match in charge.

“I feel that this is Southgate’s last match,” Shearer said, acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding Southgate’s decision.

“There will be great disappointment at home. Yes, we could have played more attacking football, but they reached the final – but when you’re here, you need to cross the finish line. The reality is that he took us to the final three years ago and brought us to the final here, but we didn’t win,” Shearer added.
