The Blues head coach Enzo Maresca has revealed EPL team are having to transfer academy footballers due to the league’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
The West London team have transferred several footballers who came through their academy over the past few seasons, with midfielder Conor Gallagher the latest to be close to leave the club and join Atl. Madrid.
Conor, who has been with the Blues since the age of 8, has a deal until the next summer, after which he could leave the team for free.
With the sale of a footballer developed in the academy able to be marked as pure profit on a team’s books, some EPL clubs have looked at homegrown players as a source of profit to apply with the PSR.
“But this is not our team’s problem, this is an EPL rules problem,” Chelsea boss shared ahead of their preseason friendly against Real Madrid in North Carolina.
"It's not a Chelsea problem, it's all the Premier League clubs' problem" 💰
